Individual and Family Health Insurance

Keep you and your family happy and healthy.

At Dickey McCay, we’re proud to offer a variety of individual and family health insurance plans from some of the most trusted carriers in the nation. These plans are for those who don’t receive insurance through an employer, providing them with the protection they deserve.

While individual health insurance plans cover just one person, health insurance plans for family will cover the policyholder and family members including spouse and any children under age 26. Whichever type of plan you need, the Dickey McCay team is passionate about helping you find the ideal private health care option for you – after all, nothing is quite as important as protecting you and your family’s health!

61% of Americans have received at least one unexpected medical bill

Why Do I Need Health Insurance?

To say that life can throw us curve balls now and then would be a bit of an understatement, especially when it comes to health. Did you know that 61 % of Americans have received at least one unexpected medical bill?

Furthermore, 3 out of 4 adults have said that such a bill would cause them significant financial hardship

Access to proper healthcare isn’t cheap, and repeated or chronic illness can quickly run up an uninsured person’s debt, even leading to bankruptcy. Financial worries are the last thing a person or family dealing with health issues needs.

Solid personal health insurance packages safeguard not only your physical and mental health by giving you access to the resources you need when you need them, but your financial health as well by ensuring those vital services are available at an affordable rate.

How Do I Find the Right Health Insurance Plan?

Since there are so many private health care insurance carriers and packages out there, how do you find the right healthcare plan for your situation? It can be complicated, as so many different factors come into the picture – your health, budget, any medications you need, and whether or not you need to see specialists, among others. This is where the type of plan you choose – HMO, PPO, POS, or EPO – becomes highly relevant.

To help you better understand these terms, let’s go through a quick, simplified run-down of the main types of healthcare plans and what they entail.

Types of Health Insurance

First, we have HMOs, one of the most common of private medical insurance plans. With an HMO, you’ll pick a primary care physician who oversees the plan for you. HMOs include a network of doctors and hospitals, and you’ll only be able to file a claim if you see a doctor or visit a hospital that’s inside the network. If you need to see a specialist, your primary care physician will select one for you. The main drawback of HMOs is that they don’t allow as much freedom as other plans – you’ll be limited in which doctors you can go to.

The trade-off, however, is that HMOs are one of the cheapest options available, with low or non-existent deductibles. They’re usually a good option for urban areas as HMO network doctors tend to be in cities.

PPO plans are a bit more flexible than HMOs. Like HMOs they include a network of doctors but, unlike HMOs, you’ll be able to file a claim if you see a doctor outside the network. Of course, you’ll pay less by staying inside. In addition, you won’t need a referral from a primary care physician in order to see a specialist. Both of these factors make PPOs a good option for people who need to see a lot of specialists.

That being said, overall out-of-pocket costs will be greater than those found in HMOs and generally include a deductible.

Point of Service (POS) plans are like a hybrid of HMOs and PPOs – like an HMO, you’ll require a primary care physician to provide referrals to specialists, while like a PPO, you can get coverage for out-of-network doctors. If your primary care physician refers you to a specialist who’s out-of-network – something that’s not possible in an HMO – you’ll get more coverage than you would seeing someone out of network without a referral, which can be a nice perk.

POS plans are less expensive than PPOs but usually don’t have as many in-network doctors. Getting your claims filed can also take a lot of paperwork.

EPOs are similar to HMOs in that they include a network of doctors and hospitals that you can’t go outside of. Unlike an HMO, though, you won’t need a referral to see a specialist.

EPOs can be even cheaper than HMOs, and provide a good individual health insurance option to those who live in rural areas.
