Less than ten miles northeast of Blue Ridge, GA in Fannin County is a small, unincorporated community known as Mineral Bluff, GA. With a population of only 150 people, Mineral Bluff is an outdoor mecca of rivers and creeks, mountains and hills, and historical landmarks. Every year, Mineral Bluff sees many visitors making an ideal destination just a short drive 80 miles east of Chattanooga and 100 miles north of Atlanta. A quiet, convenient destination, Mineral Bluff’s history lives on at beautiful apple orchards and small town lore.
In the late 1800s, the community’s historic train station, the Mineral Bluff Depot, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is not only the oldest building in Fannin County, it is also the only surviving depot of the Georgia trainline. At the time of the railroads, many travelers visited Mineral Springs by rail to experience its energizing waters. According to local legends, these mineral waters were not only energizing, but also said to be a fountain of youth according to the Native tribes. Travelers from other areas of the southeast began to hear such stories and visited the waters. Many of the visitors fell in love with the mountain bluffs and mineral waters, making this small area their eventual home, building and forming this new community. Eventually the popularity of the mineral waters lost outsider’s interest, and a quiet community was left with new, local residents and less tourists.
Years later Mineral Bluff is a slow, small, southeastern town still known in Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina for having the best mineral springs in the southeast.
