What is BOP – Business Owners Policy?

Business Owners Policy (BOP) is enhanced insurance that combines general liability insurance and property insurance. The insurance information institute in an article did an excellent job identifying what was included in the Business Owners Policy.

BOPs Include:

  1. Property Insurance for buildings and contents owned by the company; there are two different forms, standard and special, which provides more comprehensive coverage.
  2. Business Interruption Insurance, which covers the loss of income resulting from a fire or other catastrophe that disrupts the operation of the business. It can also include the extra expense of operating out of temporary location
  3. Liability Protection, which covers your company’s legal responsibility for the harm it may cause to others. This harm is a result of things that you and your employees do or fail to do in your business operations that may cause bodily injury or property damage due to defective products, faulty installations and errors in services provided.

BOPs do NOT cover professional liability, auto insurance, worker’s compensation or health and disability insurance.  You will need separate insurance policies to cover professional services, vehicles and your employees.

Something to consider when seeking a business insurance or business owners policy is Insurance companies who sell business or commercial insurance offer policies which combine protection from all or most of the major property and liability risks and package them into one program for the business; however, they can be sold as separate coverages as well.  One type of package purchased by a small or mid-sized businesses is the Business Owners Policy (BOP).

At Dickey McCay Insurance, we work with the business to determine whether a separate or packaged policy provides the best protection and meets the goals of the company. Packaged policies are created for businesses that generally face the same type and degree of risk as a larger company.  The larger companies usually purchase a commercial package policy or customize their insurance requirements with the specific policies to the cover their special business risks.  Our trained professionals seek to understand the short and long term goals and objectives of the business, potential risks, and work with company to make the best insurance recommendation to protect the business.  The Business Owners Policy has its advantages but there may be more protection needed.  The good news is that whatever your business or commercial need, we have the insurance experience and carrier resources available to protect your assets.
