Disability

Protect Your Assets and Care with Disability Insurance.

What is the Best Route or Course of Action?

When looking for an Individual Disability Insurance plan, you will notice that you have options for the types of coverage available through Dickey McCay in order to create a plan that covers you if you have  an accident or injury resulting in a disability that prevents you from working.

Disability plays no favorites.
Just because you are injured does not mean that you no longer have to pay for your home, children, utility bills, etc.

This is where Disability Insurance pays off as it is not the same as obtaining disability insurance through Social Security which has many stipulations and regulations; anyone who wishes to insure their paycheck if they are disable can simply build and buy Disability Insurance.

When creating a plan with one of Dickey McCay’s experienced agents, you will find that there are two types of Disability Insurance policies available:

  1. Short-term Disability: This plan assists in making up a large portion of lost income if you become disabled and it requires you to be absent from your job for six months or less. This plan typically kicks in after all of your other options like paid time off and/or sick leave have been used
  2. Long-term Disability: This plan will generally play between 50 to 70 percent of your salary at the time you purchase the policy for a certain length of time ranging from six months to five years up until you reach 65 years of age.

Remember, insurance is all about protecting you and your family from losing more than you can afford if the unexpected happens. To put your chances of becoming disabled at risk, consider the following scenario created using current US statistics from CDA’s PDQ disability risk calculator:

  • A typical female, age 35, 5’4″, 125 pounds, non-smoker, who works mostly an office job, with some outdoor physical responsibilities, and who leads a healthy lifestyle has the following risks:
    • A 24% chance of becoming disabled for 3 months or longer during her working career;
      • with a 38% chance that the disability would last 5 years or longer,
      • and with the average disability for someone like her lasting 82 months.
    • If this same person used tobacco and weighed 160 pounds, the risk would increase to a 41% chance of becoming disabled for 3 months or longer. To calculate your own Personal Disability Quotient (PDQ), go to: http://www.whatsmypdq.org.

Unfortunately, most Americans do not consider themselves at risk and make the mistake of not obtaining Disability Insurance. While 64% of wage earners believe they have a 2% or less chance of being disabled for 3 months or more during their working career, it should be noted that the actual odds for a worker entering the workforce today is about 25%.

If and when the unexpected does occur, you will rest easy knowing that Dickey McCay is here for you to create a Disability Insurance policy that will keep you and your family from facing additional financial hardship if you become disabled and cannot work. Even with Social Security’s Disability Insurance offered through some jobs, 65% of initial SSDI claim applications were denied in 2012, a risk you cannot afford. Can your family live on $1,130 a month? That’s the average monthly benefit paid by Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) at the end of 2012.
